Catching up....

So, I have been extremely lazy the last few weeks. I mean to update the blog, but never seem to get around to doing it. We finally have summer weather :)!!! I won't say it is really too hot because that would be complaining about the heat, but it is rather warm.

Since school got out, the girls and I have been really busy. The library has a summer program going on and every Tuesday we go sit in the park and watch whatever is happening that day. A few week ago, they had a magician that the girls loved. Janae is still trying to figure out how to do the tricks. She asked me tonight if I could do the magic trick to make the knot jump out of her shoelace. Last week was a storyteller. The girls were impressed that she could tell lots of stories without even reading any books! Since she wrote most of the stories, it is safe to say she didn't need one. Today there was a guy who did noises. The kids all loved him!! He taught them several noise but made sure they knew that they were to be practiced outside only. Thank you Noise Guy!! The girls are doing the summer reading program through the library also. For every ten books read, their name goes into a drawing for a portable dvd player to be given away at the end of summer.

The week after school got out, both girls did swim lessons. Addyson is taking after Janae, she is a fish. Addyson loved level I. She passed into level II for the next session that starts next week. Janae started level IV this time. It is a lot harder than previous levels, so she really had to work hard. She got frustrated after only a couple of days because she always seemed to be finishing last. It took a lot of explaining that the other kids had all been in the level before and she hadn't, so they knew more of what they were doing. Finally, she got a new teacher who was great about working one on one with her to help with her strokes. She will do fine this next session.
Each week we go to the summer movie at the theater. Addyson has been asking for a long time when they were going to start up again, since we rarely go during the rest of the year. It is a great way to see movies, even though we've already seen some of them. The theater makes it really affordable to go, 11 movies for $7.50. They also offer a kids popcorn and pop for only $2.50 during the show. Cheap entertainment!!!

What else have we done? Hmm..... oh yeah, we went camping a few weekends ago. It was going to be us, Scott's parents and a couple of brothers. His dad got sick the week before and had missed too much work to come and his mom needed to go to a funeral, so it was only the brothers and a wife that came. We went to Bridger Lake, near Mountain View, a favorite place of ours. The girls love walking around the lake, especially now that the forest service has improved the path. Addyson wanted to go hiking, so we started up a hill thinking that it would be a short hike. Wrong!! We hiked about a mile with Addyson running the whole way up. We would yell for her to stop and wait for us to catch up, which she would, until we got to her, and then it was off running again. For those of us who are out of shape (not fat, just out of shape), we never caught our breath until we got back to camp. I forgot my camera, so no pictures of the trip, sorry.

Last Thursday, the girls and I drove 2 1/2 hours to Riverton to see friends. They are moving from Maine to Alaska, with the Coast Guard. When Nel emailed a while back and said they were making the trek west, we made plans to meet up. It was a long day of driving, but a good one. Janae kind of remembered Johnny and Sarah, mainly from pictures and Addyson had no clue who they were. We met at a park for a picnic and let the kids play. It was great to see them, it's been 2 1/2 years. We wish them the best of luck in Alaska.

Last weekend we headed to Utah for a family reunion. Scott's mom organized the reunion for her side of the family. I have never met some them, so it was nice to. As Addyson was getting dressed that morning, she asked why she wasn't wearing a dress to the funeral. I had to laugh, she's not supposed to think of reunions as funerals until she is much older!! Janae met a third cousin who is the same age as her and had a great time. Addyson enjoyed following the little ones around and riding grandmas big wheel.

Later that night at Grandmas house, the family had a watermelon eating contest. Janae knew for sure that she could win because she loves watermelon so much. Boy was she surprised when Great Uncle Pete finished his slice in about 10 seconds!! She expected him chew and swallow every bite! I decided to play on the swings with Addyson since Scott was pushing. Just a quick FYI- don't decide to jump out of the swing when your my age, it hurts! I realize that I am not as young as I once was now. It hurt so much I thought several bones must have been broken in my feet and ankles. No, just the impact of a lot of weight!

That night, at bedtime, Aunt Tami brought out her violin to play the girls a bedtime song or two. Both girls love music, so they were excited. It got even better when Aunt Tami asked if they wanted to play too. Addyson didn't have long enough arms, so dad had to help a little.

I almost forgot the best part of the whole weekend! Not long after we got to Grandmas house, Merilee, Scott's sister, needed a ride to get a pedicure. I volunteered and while I was there anyway, went ahead and got one myself. I have gotten a few pedicures at the beauty school here in town. Never again though! The lady was really talkative and made me laugh. She talked me into not only getting my toenails polished, (I never, ever do) I got a french pedicure. She assured me that it would make my toes look longer. What do you think? I still say I have fat, stubby toes. She also used a blade on my heels and made then feel like a babies bottom, her words. I plan on going back every chance I get. (Sorry about the picture of a nasty foot)

So, that is what we have been up to the last few weeks. I will try to be better at updating more often, but I won't promise anything.

Movin' on up .............

to 2nd grade :)

Today was Janae's last day of 1st grade. We are now the proud parents of a 2nd grader! Are we getting old or what? Addyson and I went this morning for the awards assembly where Janae received an "Outstanding Attendance" award. She only missed 1/2 day this whole year, she had a dentist appointment. We planned on staying only until after lunch, but Addyson was feeling very grown up and wanted to stay. Janae's teacher didn't mind, so we stayed. She actually asked if I had errands to do because she wanted Addyson to stay, with or without me.

The kids were filled with excitement all day because they didn't have to do any school work. Originally the whole school was going to walk to a nearby park to play and eat lunch, but it was a gray, rainy day, so they all stayed at school. The 1st grade teachers planned some fun activities for the kids. After an extra long morning recess, they had snack time. I made some cookies for Janae's class and the class decided to share with the other 1st graders. I think the batch made about 200 cookies; at 15 per pan, it was a long night of baking. The classrooms were set up into different stations. The kids got to blow bubbles with a straw; play with bins of blocks, dominoes, stamps; have cotton ball races; and the favorite for all- shaving a balloon. After lunch, the kids got to wrap their teacher like a mummy-what a blast. They also got to eat licorice with a partner like in "Lady and the Tramp". To end the day, they watched "Babe".

Janae will miss Mrs. Shears next year. She has been a great teacher. But Janae is excited that her 2nd grade teacher was my 1st grade teacher.

Hopefully we will all survive the summer of being together 24/7!

Jackson Elementary Field Day

Today was Field Day at Janae's school. I signed up to be a helper with one of the stations. I got the "Find Your Shoe Relay". The kids took off 1 shoe and we put them in a pile at the end of the race course. They had to race against other teams to find their shoe, get in on and get back to let the next person go. They all seemed to have fun. I wanted to take pictures of Janae and wasn't sure how I was going to be able to. One of boys mom from Janae's class came late and didn't have a station to man. She said she was going to follow the group around and so I asked her if she would take my camera too. There are nice people out there still.

Some of the stations were:
-dress up relay
-shoe hunt relay
-limbo
-hula hoops
-jump rope -notice both feet are off the ground
-kangaroo hop-her favorite
-sack race
-dribble contest
-marshmallow launch- she's ready to catch a marshmallow

I am glad to be able to help out as much as I do at school. I like to know what's going on with my kids and be a part of their lives. I plan on volunteering at school activites and in their classes for as long as it is "cool" to have mom there.

Brownie Sundaes

Janae was having so much fun cooking that we decided to make dessert too. It was a secret between her and I what the final dessert was, Addyson and dad thought we were just having brownies. Addyson came to help mix the brownies and lick the bowl. I realized that I rarely let them lick the bowl, there isn't usually much left when I use a spatula to scrape out the bowl. I intentionally left some batter in the bowl for them to lick out. As you can tell, they had a great time. The brownie sundaes were a hit with everyone. What a great day with my girls!!

In the kitchen with...

Today I planned on making potstickers (fried won tons) as part of our dinner. The girls always want to help, but I usually try to get them interested in something else before I start. I know, I truly am a mean mom, but it is so much faster to do things like that by myself. Janae kept a close eye on what I was doing and kept asking when I was going to start. I gave in and let her help. I was quite surprised at how good she was at folding the potstickers. Hers looked like presents to her. She thanked me several times for letting her cook with me. I also heard several times that she can't wait to be as good a cook as me. To which I replied, "You just don't know what other peoples cooking is like." She then informed me that she did and mine was the best. I still think she has led a sheltered life and will be surprised what good food really is when she tries it. Anyways, she had fun and so did I. I will be letting her help more now, she is growing up after all, and has show how much help she can be.
